ICENI AMATEUR BOXING CLUB

SHORT CIRCUITS SPORTS GYM.

Welcome to ICENI A.B.C.

  .
For those of you who weren't around in the Roman days let me tell you why we chose the name ICENI, most people have heard of Queen Boadicea who fought against the Roman invasion with a tribe of warriors who inflicted heavy losses on the great Roman legions. That tribe of fighters were called the ICENI, and were allegedly based in the fens of south Cambridgeshire.
.
The boxing club has now been operational for two seasons, and although we haven't set the world on fire, we have eased gently into the sport with a good squad of boxers who were all 'no bouters' or complete novices. Like everyone, we have made mistakes, but we have learnt and in many instances have reversed decisions against opponents.
.
Next season we intend to enter boxers into some of the championships and we also welcome females who want to box.

So you want to box competitively?
  .
Before thinking about joining, contemplate these figures that I have assessed over the last fifteen years.
For every person, male or female who walks through the door and says they want to box competitively. 85% never return after the first couple of training sessions, 14% manage a month or so and only 1% ever climb through the ropes to box and fulfil their dreams, of this 1%  half never enter the ring again!

  .
Someone has got to win those gold medals and it could be you! All you need is total dedication, skill and the will to win. Now is the time!

  Sponsors
  .
As with most boxing clubs we are dependent on the generosity of individuals/companies to provide equipment, sponsorship etc. Our president Mr Frank Lindsay of J F. Lindsay Construction has been very generous and this has allowed us to operate one of the few full time gyms, offering a range of times to suit people to train who are not eligible to box or don't wish to box competitively.
The club also receives financial backing from Mr Kester Lilley who owns Lilley of Sawston, a successful garden maintenance company. We are also fortunate to have the backing of others who wish to remain anonymous.
We have had two very successful home boxing shows at the Guildhall in Cambridge, these also generate much needed revenue.
